John Ditullio is a member of the American Nazi party. He is on trial in Florida for murdering a gay youth. He has tattoos on his neck and face, including barbed wire, a swastika and an F word phrase or two. His lawyer argued that these tattoos might prejudice the jury’s perception of his client and he convinced the judge to order the government to spend $125/day on a make up artist to cover up those tattoos.
I think the judge should have gone further and ordered the accused white supremacist to really come across looking good for the jury. His Honour should have made the neo-Nazi shave his hair and don a white robe making him look like Gandhi. Or the judge could have ordered that Ditullio put on a white dress and gray wig making him a dead ringer for Mother Teresa. Or he could have made him look like the man of peace himself, colouring his face a bit, and putting on a suit and a black curly toupee to look like Obama. Then again had I been the judge I would have made him most appealing to a Florida jury demanding that the make up artist redo him to look like Ayatollah Khomeini.
December 11th is a day of justice. On this day in 1792 Louis XVI went on trial. I think had he had John Ditullio’s lawyer, Louis would have faced his accusers not looking like a king. It certainly did not help for Louis to be sitting in the courtroom wearing a crown, holding a sceptre and eating apple strudel.
December 11th 2008 is also the day the police arrested Bernard Madoff. I think his lawyer blew it. He should have ensured that in court his client look different, like not resembling Bernard Madoff. He could have asked that a make up artist paint some tattoos on Madoff’s face. Maybe some pink hearts,
And on this day in 1941 Germany and Italy declared war on the United States for declaring war on Japan. To counter this measure, the U.S. declared war back on Italy and Germany. I always wondered what a declaration of war means. What happens it you fail to declare war and nonetheless wage one? Does the Geneva Convention govern this situation? Is your war effort a nullity? Is it something like suing the Queen without giving the mandatory 60 days advance notice under the Proceedings Against the Crown Act? If you win, do you have return the lands you seize? Just a thought.
