Clergy, Cleanliness, and Clowns

This has been a week of stories about people acting very foolishly.

Church minister Raymond Clayton Sr. of Williamsport, Pennsylvania has been hit for one year in the slammer for identity theft. It seems he secured his parishioners’ personal info and then he applied and received credit cards which he racked up to the tune of $28,000.00. That’s a lot of candles. What is the world coming too? Is nothing sacred? I suggest that any people going to confession get suspicious if the priest they are confessing to asks you for 10 Hail Marys and your Visa number.

And in Xenia, Ohio, Burger King fired an employee who decided to strip naked and take a soap bath in the utility sink. Another employee who videoed the event also got canned. Burger King reps say they have sterilized the sink. I am not convinced by their assurances. Nor am I comfortable now about what goes on behind the scenes in these places. I don’t know about you but for the next little while I’ll be packing my own box lunch. No sense taking a chance and ending up with a whopper.

And perhaps the epitome of stupidity took place in Fairfield, Connecticut where some clown snuck behind the bar at a restaurant and made off with the tip jar. The guy had it all worked out. He dressed up as a woman. But this was hardly the great British train robbery. The trouble was the theft, $30.00 in tips, was caught on video surveillance. The second problem was the guy forgot that he was sporting a large beard. It did not take too long for Fairfield’s finest to make an arrest not far from the scene of the crime, where they apprehended the bearded suspect dressed in a halter top and Capri pants, with his hand in the jar.

I have no sympathy for the clergyman and the clean freak. If, however, I was representing the tip thief in drag, I’d urge the court to dismiss the charges on the grounds that it would be an embarrassment to the court, bringing the justice system into disrepute, to convict someone that stupid.
