I Want to Hold Your Money, Yeah, Yeah Yeah

This was not a bad week for Heather Mills, Paul McCartney’s ex.
A judge in the family division in London awarded her 24.3 million pounds or about $48.6 million for her troubles of living as husband and wife for four years with the former Beatle. This works out to over $12 million per year of marriage. In fact it works out to about $1,400 per hour. This is even more than Maple Leaf superstar Mats Sundin earns. And Mills doesn’t even speak Swedish.
But here is the real scoop. This decision will not bode well for the lawyers. I thing it spells disaster, big time. You see, Mills was self represented. In fact she has even urged other would be divorcees to go it alone, indicating that “you’d save yourself a fortune”.
I think we have to act quickly. Lawyers in England should urge Paul McCartney to launch an appeal immediately. And we should then try to get intervener status in the appeal. We can tell the court that this case had little to do with Heather Mills’ divorce issues. It is obvious that she launched this case simply to undermine the legal profession, by suggesting that anyone can sue their husband without the help of a lawyer and collect almost $50 million. Her devious ploy to single handedly put the legal profession on moth balls is unmistakable. Furthermore she has committed the cardinal sin of being cheap, not wanting to spend money on lawyers.
I’ll bet many lawyers have already received calls from their clients telling them, “Stand aside, you’re fired. I’m going to court and tell the judge my story. I know exactly what to do. I’ve been watching Boston Legal.”
This is the biggest crisis lawyers have faced since Shakespeare said, “The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers.”
It’s a different ball game now. It had definitely been a hard day’s night. I really long for yesterday, when all our troubles seemed so far away.
